Health Sciences (HES) is a multidisciplinary academic education and research unit placed in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Tampere University. The most important interdisciplinary themes at HES include health and health promotion for children, youth and families; human ageing and the ageing population; and the health care and social services system. HES also houses several research centres.

Gerontological research at the Faculty of Social Sciences focuses on health, functioning and quality of life in old age; ageing as a social and cultural phenomenon; and the challenges faced by the ageing society. We apply various research methods ranging from the epidemiological analysis of longitudinal data and registry research to the qualitative methods employed in social sciences. Our research groups working on ageing and the ageing society are part of the Gerontology Research Center (GEREC), which is a collaboration between Tampere University and the University of Jyväskylä. Our research groups in gerontology are part of the Centre of Excellence in Research in Ageing and Care which is funded by the Academy of Finland. (CoEAgeCare).


Job description

We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished academics to conduct, organize and supervise scientific research, develop gerontology as a multidisciplinary field, participate in public engagement activities and maintain international collaborations. These professors will hold shared senior/supervisory responsibility for conducting and developing ageing research and will participate in teaching courses included in our multidisciplinary bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes, including medical programmes.

Requirements

Associate Professor

We require:

an applicable doctoral degree
a track record of independent scholarly activity
teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding
a track record of international scholarly activity.

Professor

We require:

an applicable doctoral degree
high-level scholarly expertise
experience of leading scientific research
ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction
a track record of winning external research funding
a track record of international scholarly activity

You will have experience of leading or making a major contribution to a research group. We expect you to be fluent in the English language to be able to successfully carry out the duties of the position. Fluent Finnish will be considered as an advantage. Your proposed work should preferably be aligned with our Faculty’s goals and priorities in gerontology research.

Candidates may be invited for a video interview during the first stage of the recruitment process. The most qualified candidates will be invited to Tampere university for an interview and may undergo an aptitude assessment. They will also undergo a review by external experts and may be required to give a demonstration of their teaching skills.

We offer

Initial appointment for associate professor is for five years and subject to successful performance. You will become a tenured member of the Faculty staff at the end of the five-year period. You will be well-supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to Faculty positions. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Salaries are based on the job demands and on employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The minimum starting salary of an associate professor will range between € 4577– €5130 per month and salary of a professor between 5535€-6203€ per month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.
